Please check your coverage for mental health services by asking the following questions of your insurance provider:
Do I have mental health benefits? What is my deductible and has it been met? How many sessions per week and/or per year does my insurance cover? Is approval required from my primary care physician?
Self-pay vs Insurance:
Many insurance companies only cover care they consider to be medically necessary. This can dictate frequency of sessions and always requires a mental health diagnosis to be assigned by myself in order to bill for it. Additionally, the privacy of your information is limited. The insurance company can review your records at their discretion and your diagnosis can be shared with other insurance companies for not just future health insurance but also for life and disability insurances. Also the information can be shared to the government, potentially impacting employment in particular fields of the government, like the military.
Many clients choose to use insurance in order to reduce the cost of services. Other clients choose self-pay so that they do not have to be diagnosed with a mental health diagnosis, or so that therapy does not have to be limited by the insurance company, or to protect their privacy.
